Vinyl Records - an overview

What is it about Vinyl Records that people love so? For me it’s lots of different things - I find them highly tactile and the whole process of collecting albums, cleaning records and simply playing them far more rewarding than the (in my view) coldness of CDs.

Some people tell me they prefer the sound of Vinyl over CDs. I have a lot of empathy with this thought. For me the sound of a good quality record played on a great turntable is a far more warm sound than CDs ... But hey .... it’s subjective, and who’s to say CDs don’t sound better ..... beauty they say is in the eye of the beholder - or in this case - ear!

Another point for me are the memories LP’s conjure up. The first LP into our house was bought by my brother Robert - the first 45 I bought was in Christmas 1963, a gift for a girl called Victoria. It was the Beatles ‘I wanna hold your hand’

Unfortunately for me (I’m sorry to say) it was unrequited love - she never did hold my hand - mind you she kept the record!! I still haven't replaced the recording - but continue to look for a mint copy of the original UK recording on the Parlophone label!

So, over the next few pages you will find some of my and my friends thoughts on a variety of matters relating to Vinyl Records, LP’s 45’s EP’s and 78’s, ranging from how to care for records ... through valuing records and finding rare records ... to recommendations for Records Dealers. It is not exhaustive - but over the next few months I hope we can build a great reference base for all things vinyl. Please just follow each links below to take you to each page.

If there is a subject you would like to contribute towards - or suggest a topic currently not covered please contact me with the details and I will be happily to add your views.

The history of vinyl records started in 1930, when RCA Victor launched the first commercially-available long playing vinyl record - marketed as "Program Transcription" discs........

Caring for Vinyl records is important as all recorded materials are delicate, and susceptible to damage and wear. ........

The following system to appraise vinyl records was first developed by Goldmine Records. ........

There are various methods in which you can value record collections. Some are simple, others require a certain amount of leg-work.

Finding rare records can be time consuming, but, at the same time, can be fun and rewarding.

The answer to should you catalogue your record collection is really simple - YES!!

I am trying to build a list of 'walk-in' UK vinyl record shops - whose who might not have their own website.....

Unfortunately buying records safely in the net can be a bit of a lottery....
