All you need to know about phono turntables

I hope you will find this section of interest, especially if you don’t have any old phono turntables hidden in the attic capable of playing your newly acquired record collection. No point in buying all those lovely vinyl records if you haven't anything to play them on!

Certainly it can be very confusing working your way through the various options on record decks as due to the increase in interest a number of manufacturers have started to make record players of all levels of standard - and - naturally - cost!!

This section’s objective is to cover some of the basics in design and compatibility with your existing audio systems and provide links for the purchase of your new turntable.

One very important point to mention here - if you have a current audio system, bought in the last few years, the chances are it will not have an input for a phono turntable.

This is because, at the time of manufacture of your audio system, it was not needed and thus considered a waste of money. So you will need to ensure you either; a) buy a new record deck that comes complete with an integral phono preamplifier; or b) buy a separate Phono preamplifier.

If not, your new phono turntable will not work on any of the inputs currently provided on your amplifier as the electrical signal from the turntable’s ‘needle’ is far too low for it to register on any of the available inputs.

However you will find more information about this important aspect as the section unfolds.
